Winter weather leads to multi-vehicle collisions in Barrie

Barrie police closed two areas Monday afternoon following separate multi-vehicle collisions, likely caused by weather conditions. The crashes occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Veteran’s Drive between Walker Road and McKay Road, and on Yonge Street between Mapleview Drive East and Lockhart Road.

Eight vehicles were involved in the first crash, and one person was hospitalized. Shortly after, another crash with eight vehicles occurred on Yonge Street, sending three people to the hospital. Weather, including snow squalls and near-zero visibility, was a factor in both incidents, but no serious injuries were reported.

Both roads reopened by 5 p.m. Police had earlier urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel due to the extreme weather. They reminded drivers to adjust to the conditions by reducing speed and increasing following distance.
